TYPICAL PROCEDURES FOR APPLYING TO
PRIVATE COLLEGES AND PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES


· Step 1.
Obtain application. (Write, e-mail, call, or download computer-based applications, or use the common application if appropriate.)
Note the application deadline and admissions requirements for the SAT I, SAT II, ACT, etc. They vary with each institution.

· Step 2.
READ the directions carefully. DIVIDE the application packet into (3) three separate stacks, one for you, one for your counselor (It may be titled School Report, Counselor Report, or Secondary School Report. There will also be a Mid-Year Report form.), and one for your teachers (Teacher Recommendation). COMPLETE the student portion on the counselor and teacher forms. (You need to fill out only (1) one copy of the Common Application for your counselor and teacher.)

· Step 3.
Following these steps is the only way to assure your packet will reach the colleges by their deadline date.
Tape the Private College form listing your colleges and deadline dates to a 9-inch by 12-inch manila envelope.
Insert the following forms and envelopes into the large envelope and give it to the registrar by the deadline dates listed on the following pages. The registrar will distribute the required forms to your counselor.

a. Request for Recommendation Form and Parent Brag Form.

b. Secondary School Report Form for each college with a 6-inch by 9-inch envelope with Gunn's return address, and THREE (3) First Class postage stamps affixed. If the college has no form for the counselor enclose, only the stamped envelope.

c. Midyear Report Form for each college and a business size envelope addressed to the college with the Gunn return address and ONE (1) First Class postage stamp affixed.

d. Take the packet to the Registrar with the appropriate fees. All students will receive TWO (2) free transcripts. There will be an $10.00 charge for each additional transcript, including mid-year and final reports. As you need additional transcripts, pay the transcript fee of $10.00 to the registrar. The Registrar compiles the final packet with transcript, counselor forms and letter, other school information and does the final mailing.

· Step 4.
Give teacher recommendation forms to individual teachers.
Give each teacher a stamped (First Class), business envelope addressed to the college with Gunn's return address.

· Step 5.
Request your SAT I, ACT, and/or SAT II scores be sent directly to the colleges. All requests must be made directly to the appropriate testing service for scores to be sent to your college choices.

TYPICAL PROCEDURES FOR APPLYING TO
OUT-OF-STATE PUBLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

· Step 1.

Obtain application. (Write, e-mail, call or download computer-based applications.)

(Note the application deadline and admissions requirements for the SAT I, SAT II, ACT, etc.). They vary with each institution.

· Step 2. Read directions carefully. Requirements vary widely and may not follow this pattern.

· Step 3. Complete all student portions of the application.

· Step 4. Submit the entire application packet including the application fee to the registrar, along with:

a. Transcript request form and transcript fee ($10.00) if you have used your two, (2) free transcripts.

b. An addressed 6-inch by 9-inch (or larger) envelope with three (3) First Class postage stamps and Gunn's return address.

c. Registrar compiles packet with transcript and other school information for final mailing.

· Step 5.
(IF REQUIRED BY THE COLLEGE) Ask teachers to write a recommendation, which is mailed separately from the application.
Give the teacher a business-sized envelope addressed to the school with Gunn's return address, with one (1) First Class postage stamp.

· STEP 6.
Request your SAT I, ACT, and/or SAT II scores be sent to the colleges.
The request must be made directly to the appropriate testing service for scores to be sent to your college choices.




PROCEDURES FOR APPLYING TO
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA and CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITIES and COMMUNITY COLLEGES (JC's)


· Step 1.
Admission applications will be available in the College and Career Center in early October for the UC's and CSU's. Applications can also be completed on the web. The UC's and CSU's prefer you do the on-line admissions through their web sites. CSU's begin accepting applications in October.

· Step 2.
Complete the application form during the November filing period. (No teacher or counselor recommendation is required nor will it be accepted by a UC or CSU campus.). TRANSCRIPTS: University of California and California State Universities do not require a transcript be sent from Gunn at the time of application.

· Step 3.
Community College applications will be available the second semester. Apply during priority application dates, if available. It may give you priority for registering for your classes the next registration period.


· FINAL STEP.
In ALL cases you MUST turn in a Request for Final Transcript to the registrar for the school you plan to attend along with the $10.00 transcript fee.

Counselors CANNOT guarantee recommendations will reach colleges on time unless the above deadlines are met.
Don't forget to check the date that winter break starts this year. Nothing can be sent to colleges after that date until we return to school in January.
