Sponsored by YCS and Gunn Student Activities, Service Day is a perfect opportunity for students to go out in the community and help others. Last year more than 200 students participated in Gunn Service Day and visited 10 different sites.
Hand-picked by the YCS staff, the organizations who participate in Service Day provide a variety of different ways for students to reach out to others and help administer service to their communities. Some of the organizations who have participated in past years include:
Half Moon Bay
Agnews Nixon Elementary
Sacred Heart Lytton Gardens
R.A.F.T. Red Cross
Mid-Peninsula Creative Montessori Menlo Park Senior Center
Second Harvest Food Bank |
Here's what some of the students had to say about their experience with Gunn Service Day this year:
- The best part was interacting with a new section of the community that most of us had never realized before. This was my first time doing a “people” project.
- Seeing the clients work so hard to accomplish little things made me appreciate my own life.
- I’ve worked with autistic kids before and I always got so much out of the experience and wanted to do it again. It was challenging to get a response from the clients, but the challenge was the experience.
- Getting to know the kids was really fun! Playing with them was also fun and interesting
- Meeting/hanging out with the kids and teaching them something was great; I felt as if I made a difference
- I liked working with the preschoolers and remembering how fun pre-school was.
- Hoeing in Half Moon Bay, it was joyful
- Planting new plants was fun
- Learning about the importance of native plants was interesting
- Learning new things in the kitchen and communication with people I always see but never talk to was a new experience.
- I learned that homeless people really great people.
- I liked being able to help people immediately.
- I enjoyed socializing with the clients while serving.
- I enjoyed being able to see another group of people in a light different than the one I usually see them in.
